A history shaped by borders

A two-thousand-year-old town, a unique citadel

Perched on its promontory between the upper town and the lower town, Montmédy watches over the Chiers valley, 8 km from Belgium. Fortified by Charles V around 1545, besieged by Louis XIV with a young engineer named Vauban, it became part of France in 1659.

Today, its citadel is home to residents, artists' studios, two museums and a spectacular circuit of the ramparts.
